Google Forms is one of the most widely used online form and survey tools. It’s been here for a few years now and it’s backed by Google. Why not use it? First of all, not everything Google does is total amazeballs. That, and there are reasons not to use it (or throw it away for something better). If you’ve used Google Forms, you know it’s not the most fun in the world. Everything is just plain plain text and soulless formatting (which is quite surprising for a Google product). Typeform looks like it belongs. The design is cool, great, plus three more similar adjectives. Typeform handles the entire process of creating and completing surveys happyThe forms are responsive by default and look great on any device. Plus, there’s a lot more to play with here. You can create relational questions, add variables, images and content that just isn’t available in Google Forms. But I know that you are a smart boy / girl and you will not be convinced without real proof. So I decided to take the classic approach to test case comparison. I created a sample form for a Freaks & Geeks Appreciation Group in a fictional high school. Below are screenshots of the two similar forms I created in both Forms and Typeform. It is a modern web product
Typeform is up with the time in which we live. It suits Canva, Medium and Slack. It is well thought out and it exists because it tries to be better than everything else.
The design and creation process is a piece of cake
Just like filling out a Typeform document, it is also an intuitive process. You start building the form using a drag and drop editor. Just drag in the content type, customize the card, and get started. Your progress is automatically saved, so you can preview the form at any time. Speaking of content types, Typeform offers you long text, short text, email, multiple choice, drop-down list, paragraph box, and more.
Customizable themes
When I say that Typeform is a well thought out product, I mean that many decisions have already been made for you. If you just follow the process, you will still end up with something great. When you start, just start with a template that is right for your needs. If you’ve created a form from scratch, you’ll find Themes in the Design section. They have themes for all kinds of basic shapes such as registration, birthday party, club invitations and a lot more. And for a cool medium style effect, try adding a background image and lowering the brightness to about 25%. Yes, Google Forms also has themes, but they build on the basic framework of the form, which itself is the problem. While you can change the theme, just swapping the font and adding a header image doesn’t make a Google form more attractive to a user.
Getting the data out is easy
Typeforms come with embeddable widgets, so you can embed your typeform right into your web page. Just like I did below. Powered by Typeform This means that you have made it extremely easy for the user to fill out the form. They will appreciate it. And finally, visualizing your data is easy too. I’ve used Forms a few times and it has native Google Sheets integration, but it was always hard for me to figure out the options. You don’t need to do anything in Typeform. Typeform will do the tracking for you. It will tell you (also in visual form) how many users have visited the page, how many have filled out the form, how far they have come and what data they have submitted. You can then export it to an Excel file. You can also add Google Analytics to it if you wish.
Test notes
It took me a little longer to create the form with Typeform than it did with Google Forms. That’s because when I used Typeform, I was totally into it. I searched for images for the background, experimented with the layout, tried new themes, and so on.
Google Form’s interface is just plain bad at this point. It takes far too many clicks to do simple things and the options are not self-explanatory. From an end user perspective, here are some reasons why I am much more likely to fill out a Typeform form compared to a Google form.
Typeform is visual and does not burden me with information. The welcome page gives me a good introduction to what I’m getting into and since that’s the only thing on the page, I’ll probably read it sooner. The actual process of filling out a typing form is much easier. Enter, type the answer, Enter, type the answer, repeat. Pressing enter takes me to the next question and yet that’s the only piece of information on the screen. This is great for that mobile users. Google form mobile feels like a receipt from McDonalds. The text is large and clear. Much easier to read. The step-by-step approach has been proven to work many times before, even on crappy products (think Windows installers). The same principle holds the user here. The progress bar at the end turns the user on.
