Guide: Is SoundCloud Premium Worth It?

SoundCloud has just unveiled its own streaming music service, SoundCloud Go. At $ 10 a month, it competes with some more famous faces: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and others. But SoundCloud is unique in that it not only offers the same music as all of its competitors, since most of SoundCloud’s audio is user-uploaded content. In fact, some of it isn’t music at all – the website also hosts podcasts, among other things. SoundCloud Go offers exclusively features, but is it worth $ 10 a month? Photo: Prathan Chorruangsak / Shutterstock.com So what exactly is SoundCloud Go and, more importantly, should you pay $ 10 a month for it? It’s a strange service that SoundCloud offers to say the least, but since it’s so different from other streaming services out there it’s worth taking a closer look at the pros and cons.

Pro: Listen offline and without ads

With SoundCloud Go for $ 10 a month ($ 9.99 if you want to get really specific) you can listen to SoundCloud files offline and ad-free. You can’t magically access everything on SoundCloud offline, so what you can do instead is mark your favorite songs to download for offline use. This works on the desktop website as well as iOS and Android mobile apps.

Con: Every streaming service offers that

This is not the different factor between SoundCloud and its competitors. Every premium streaming service, such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Red, all offers offline listening and an ad-free experience. If that’s really what you are signing up because you don’t need SoundCloud Go to get there. Other options will serve you just fine, even if you just want to upload your own music.

Pro: SoundCloud Go has more than 125 million songs

SoundCloud promises that with a premium subscription you get access to many more songs than if you were using the free version of SoundCloud. Specifically, you would get a whopping 125 million songs available to stream. In comparison, Spotify doesn’t even have half that amount of music.

Con: 110 million users uploaded

The downside to SoundCloud’s massive 125 million song library is that, according to Macworld, 110 million of them are uploaded by users. That means that only 15 million tracks are authentic recording tracks from a verifiable source. Since Spotify and Apple Music have much larger libraries of legitimate content, you’re better off doing that if that’s what you’re doing this for. Still, if you love the creativity and variety that SoundCloud’s user base brings, you can’t find such a large library of content anywhere else.

Pro: Browse playlists and artist mixes

SoundCloud has gotten some A-list artists such as Rihanna and Kanye West on board with SoundCloud Go to create their own playlists and mixes. That means you can browse and listen to the music the stars are listening to as if they were spinning just for you. You can also listen to the wide variety of user-uploaded playlists and mixes. Note: You can also listen to user-uploaded playlists for free with SoundCloud. However, A-listers are exclusive to SoundCloud Go.

Con: Search is pretty awful

Searching content on SoundCloud, especially SoundCloud Go, is quite cumbersome. If you switch to authentic songs, you probably won’t find as many as you’d like. When you switch to user uploaded tracks, you just get confused. Many users upload songs from other artists that they modified or badly titled. So it becomes difficult to identify exactly what you are looking for and get to it immediately. Spotify’s search function will get you to the real song you want within seconds. If the pros outweigh the cons here, you can draw up for a free 30-day trial of SoundCloud Go on the SoundCloud website. READ ALSO: What to listen to music to improve focus while working
