Guide: How to Use Location-Based Reminders on Your iPhone
The built-in Reminders app in iOS is incredibly useful for keeping a synced (and even shared) list of tasks in your pocket. But did you know that Memories can also be assigned to specific locations? For example, you can configure an item in your reminders list to appear up when you go home, driving near a particular store or arriving at work. This ensures that you only see reminder notifications when they are most relevant or useful to you; don’t forget to lock the back door, buy paper towels, or deliver little Jenny’s science project! Here is how to set up location-based reminders on your iPhone or iPad.
Location-based reminders
First, launch the Reminders app to get started with location-based reminders. Then tap the plus icon to create a new reminder and give it a name.Once your new reminder has been created, tap the little circled “i” icon to the right of it.This displays a detail screen with information and options related to your reminder, such as the list it belongs to and its priority. The option we are looking for is Remind me at a location. Tap the toggle switch to turn it on.A new location box will appear below the option. Tap it to search for the relevant location, either by company name or a specific address. If you’re using the Apple Maps app or have location information saved to your contacts list, the Reminders app will also recommend certain locations, such as recently visited stores or your home. You can also choose to send a reminder when you get in or out, such as the Do Not Disturb While Driving feature feature, is activated by connecting or disconnecting from your car via Bluetooth. For the purposes of this tip, I’m going to choose to be remembered in the coffee shop. Makes perfect sense to feed the cat, right? As you can see, selecting a location will then trigger up a small card at the bottom.Notice the two tabs I mentioned in green on that screenshot. You can tap one of them to indicate that you want to be reminded when you leave or when you arrive at your chosen place. You can also drag the black dot I indicated with the arrow to expand or shrink the active area of the reminder (meaning you wouldn’t be reminded if you were across the street from another company, for example if you the location very small and specific). When you are satisfied with what you have configured, touch the ‘Details’ button in the top left corner, and then you should see your new location added on the previous screen. Then tap “Done” and you’re done! The Reminders main screen also displays the changes you just made. Now when you arrive or leave the location you have configured, a notification will appear up to tell you to do what you need. Cool! Oh, and one more note, if you want to use Siri for this, that’s really easy too. Just invoke Siri on your iPhone and say something like “Remind me when I [arrive at OR leave] [place] to [do something], “As so:If you’re not familiar with using Siri for this kind of thing, read the support article on it. Apple’s voice assistant makes tasks like this much easier and faster, and the more you use it, the better it will understand you! It’s the best we have until those neural implants come, at least.
