Guide: How to Turn On/Off Hover Cards in Chrome Browser
Even though Google Chrome is notorious for gobbling up up system memory, we often use multiple tabs. And one of the most annoying things about using multiple tabs is that they cannot be distinguished from each other. While you can move your mouse over a tab to see the title, the text in the pop-up is too small and barely visible. That’s why Google introduced Tab Hover Cards in the latest version of Chrome (v75). The feature aims to make identifying tabs a lot easier by displaying an informational map when you move the pointer on a tab. Unfortunately, the feature is not enabled by default as of now and remains hidden within the experimental Chrome flags.
Enable Tab Hover Cards in Google Chrome
If you are not familiar with how Chrome flags work, follow these steps to enable Tab Hover Cards in your browser: Step 1: Go to the Chrome Flags page by entering chrome: // flags / in the address bar and pressing enter.
Step 2: On the next page, look for tab hover cards, then click the drop-down menu next to the setting.
Step 3: Select Enabled from the drop-down menu to enable Tab Hover Cards.
Step 4: Once you get it feature, click Restart Now button in the lower right corner to restart Chrome.
With that, you now have Tab Hover Cards enabled in Google Chrome. To test it out, hover the pointer over a tab and you will see a much larger map pop-up with all the information about the tab.
But that’s not all, Google has introduced an additional setting that shows you a small preview image of the opened webpage. You can enable it from the same flags page by clicking the drop-down menu next to the Tab Hover Card Image option.
You can then select Enabled from the drop-down menu and then click Restart Now button in the bottom right corner to restart Chrome. Once Chrome has restarted, you will notice that if you move the mouse pointer over a tab, a small preview image of the tab will be displayed.
It’s worth noting both features are experimental and may not work as intended on all websites. As you can see in the attached image, in my case, the Tab Hover Card Image option only displays an enlarged thumbnail of the website logo. Now that you’ve enabled both Tab Hover Cards and Tab Hover Card images, let’s take a look at some other Chrome flags you can enable to improve your browsing experience:
Turn on Smooth scrolling
Scrolling in Chrome can look a bit choppy, especially on websites with a lot of happening. Fortunately, Google provides a Smooth Scrolling flag to fix that problem. Follow these steps to enable smooth scrolling in Chrome: Step 1: Go to the Chrome Flags page by entering chrome: // flags / in the address bar and pressing enter.
Step 2: On the next page, look for smooth scrolling, then click the drop-down menu next to the setting.
Step 3: Select Enabled from the drop-down menu, then click Restart Now button in the lower right corner to restart Chrome.
That makes smooth scrolling possible featureAfterwards, if you try to scroll through a busy web page, you will notice that it no longer stutters like it used to. Pretty neat, right?
Enable Focus Tabs
Chrome also has a cool focus mode that you can turn on if you want to read stuff in the browser without any distraction. Follow these steps to enable the Focus Tabs highlight for a better reading experience: Step 1: Go to the Chrome Flags page again by entering chrome: // flags / in the address bar and pressing enter.
Step 2: On the next page, look for focus tabs, then click the drop-down menu next to the flag.
Step 3: Click Enabled in the drop-down menu, then click Restart Now.
Step 4: After Chrome restarts, right-click on a tab and select Focus on this tab from the next menu.
That will open up the tab in a separate window that takes out all the clutter and lets you focus on the important content on the web page. Note again that it is an experimental one feature it may not work on all websites.
Turn off automatic video playback
Videos that auto-play are another hurdle that can really hinder your browsing experience. Especially those who play with audio. But you can use the Autoplay Policy flag to put an end to that. Just follow these steps to enable the flag: Step 1: Open up the Chrome Flags page by entering chrome: // flags / in the address bar and pressing enter.
Step 2: Look for autoplay policies on the next page, then click the drop-down menu next to the flag.
Step 3: Select Document User Activation Required from the drop-down menu, then click Restart Now button
Once enabled, the flag prevents websites from showing auto-playing video ads. however, the feature is not perfect in any way, and you may still see some video ads appear on websites from time to time.
