Guide: How to Create Interactive Infographics Using Infogram
These are very good times for both presenters and data users. You no longer have to look at boring pie chats and column bars, or even flat rows of facts and numbers if you’re statistically inclined. In fact, data visualization tools such as infographics have overturned the way we look at data. Agreed, it might not be for hardcore number crackers, but you can’t deny that a well-crafted infographic will get you interested enough to understand the scale of the solar system or Ireland’s top ten inventions. Cool huh! Infographics are nothing but visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended for normal people like us who find it difficult to correlate complex information with each other. Personally, I think it’s one of the best communication tools we’ve seen in recent times. But how do you create one yourself?
Go to Infogr.am
Infogr.am is a free web application that makes creating infographics easy for all of us who are not that graphically inclined. Or even statistically. Infogr.am is the tool for you if you are a student or entrepreneur and want to make a good impression at the next presentation. All you need to have on hand is the data going into the infographic. If you have, register and login to this free to use infographic maker app. Even if this is your first time and you’re not quite sure how it all comes together, don’t worry – the site’s minimal design makes it easy to get from the first to the last step. (I’m focusing on infographics here; you can create charts just as easily). The site offers you a choice of templates. Choose one and then go to the WYSIWYG editor where you need to insert the values. Here’s a template in the editor. You need to double click on the sections and enter the text:
In the next screen you load the data you have with you. Infogr.am makes it easy because you can load the data by browsing to an Excel sheet on your desktop or fill it manually with copy and paste.
You can also customize the look of the infographic by giving it your own colors, but I usually stick with the default settings because they go together nicely. Also check out other inserts on the right and side of the editor that allow you to add additional material (images, quotes, etc.) if you wish. That is it! When your infographic is ready, you can publish it directly to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or even embed it in a forum or blog.
It took me about 5 minutes to create my first infographic. I had my data ready. Test Infogr.am and tell us how easy it is for you to meet your data visualization needs. Also tell us how you want to use infographics to display information.
